Epogen
Generic Name
Epoetin alfa
Indications/Uses
Epogen is a popular veterinary, injectable medicine used for non-regenerative anemia normally associated with chronic renal failure (CRF) in dogs and cats. Epogen contains the synthetic form of erythropoietin, a naturally occurring hormone produced by the kidney, which stimulates the production of red blood cells. Deficiency of erythropoietin leads to anemia, which commonly occurs with chronic renal failure and Epogen is effective in treating this non-regenerative anemia. Kidney failure also can result in the accumulation of waste products in the blood, which could be harmful for the pet.
Precautions
Epogen should never be used in animals that are prone to allergic reactions to the drug or those with hypertension. It might react with other drugs hence proper consultation with the vet is essential before starting the treatment. In some cases, prolonged use might adversely affect the efficacy of the medication and the animal might develop resistance. The medication should be kept away from sunlight and sterility of the drug should be fully ensured. Follow the diet plan suggested by the veterinarian and always provide clean drinking water to the animal. Iron should be well supplemented while administering epogen.
Side Effects
Epogen is normally safe while administered as per the advice of a veterinarian; however it can cause some side effects in rare cases. If the anemia of the pet worsens during the course of treatment, the medication should be stopped as the animal might have developed resistance to this mode of treatment. Vomiting is another side effect, though reported only rarely.
