Doxycycline Injection
Generic Name
Doxycycline injection
Indications/Uses
Doxycycline injection is the injectable, slow release form of doxycycline. This tetracycline antibiotic is used in the treatment of several bacterial infections and also for tick-borne diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever and ehrichliosis. Doxycycline injection is also found to be effective in curing diseases like leptospirosis, which is generally transmitted through water.
Precautions
Abstain from using doxycycline injection if the pet is allergic to any of the ingredients of doxycycline or other tetracycline antibiotics. Doxycycline has a tendency to interact with penicillin and acitretin, therefore avoid administering doxycycline injection if the pet is under any medication that involves any of these drugs. It is not recommended to use this medication in pregnant or nursing animals. During the course of doxycycline therapy, it is advisable to keep the animals away from sunlight and artificial UV rays as it can result in sunburns because of the tendency of the skin to develop sensitivity to sunlight. Discard the injection vial if it is cracked or damaged or if it contains cloudy or discolored particles.
Side Effects
The most common side effects noted while administering doxycycline therapy are nausea, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. Another often reported side effect of all tetracycline antibiotics is the sensitivity of skin to sunlight. Most doxycycline injection formulations cause a mild irritation on the site of injection. Some serious side effects are skin rashes, blistering and peeling, and tendency to urinate less.
