Cyproheptadine 4mg is an antihistamine oral medication in treating and controlling allergy responses in dogs and cats. The drug acts effectively against histamine related swelling, itchiness and such other allergy related symptoms. The anti-serotonin property contained in the drug makes it the most commonly prescribed appetite stimulant for diseased cats. Cyproheptadine, the active ingredient present in the medication is responsible for the antihistamine effects of the medicine. Cyproheptadine is strictly restricted to be used only by prescription and is available in tablets.

Precautions

Do not use the medicine unless prescribed by a qualified veterinarian. Though there are not many instances of adverse reactions to the medicine, care must be taken while dealing with it. Animals that are normally allergic to the drug must be excluded from this treatment. Also, medication has to be used with caution in animals suffering from glaucoma, heart diseases, prostate gland enlargement, problems in the food pipe etc. The medicine when given with certain other drugs like barbiturates, tranquilizers and monoamine oxidase inhibitors might trigger allergic reactions in the animal. To avoid such issues, inform the veterinarian if the pet is already under some kind of medication. Moreover, overdose can cause prolonged sedation in the animal.
