Conofite
Generic Name
Miconazole Nitrate
Indications/Uses
Conofite is a synthetic antifungal agent for veterinary use in cats, dogs and in certain cases in horses too. The medication is proved to have constructive results in the management of fungal infections due to Microsporum canis, Microsporum gypseum, and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Micanozole nitrate, polyethylene glycol and ethyl alcohol are the components included in this antifungal agent. Miconazole nitrate, which corresponds to 1% miconazole base by weight is the active ingredient among the three and is quite effective against the common infection causing bacterial and fungal agents. The medication is available by prescription as Conofite spray or Conofite lotion.
Precautions
The medicine should be used only by prescription from a licensed veterinarian. There is possibility for the animal to develop irritation or reaction, when the medication is administered. It is recommended to discontinue the use of the medicine, in case of instances when the irritation persists or becomes severe. Personal protection should also be considered, as the drug is in the form of spray and lotion. The medicine, if happens to enter eyes, can cause extreme irritation. Make sure hands are cleaned after applying the medicine on the affected area of the animal; otherwise, there are chances for the fungal infection to spread.
Side Effects
As the medicine comes in direct contact with the skin of the animal, sensitization or irritation might occur. In case of prolonged irritation stop applying the medicine completely.
Dosage Information
Spray the infected area to form a light covering, twice in a day and it may be continued for 2-4 weeks, until improvement is registered. But care must be taken to spray the medicine from a considerable distance. For lotion application, use cotton swab or gauze pad to apply a thin layer of Conofite on the infected part of the skin. Apply once a day for about 2-4 weeks. In either case, if no result is seen consider for medical diagnosis, although certain extreme cases would take over 6 weeks to show effective results. However, to avoid infection and reinfection, clipping of the hair over and around the affected area is advised.
