Indications/Uses
Cestex is a common anthelmintic tablet used for the treatment of tapeworms (cestodes) in cats and dogs. Cestex is a single dose prescription medication. The canine cestodes of Dipylidium caninum and Taenia pisiformis, and feline cestodes of Dipylidium caninum and Taenia taeniaeformis can be effectively treated with Cestex. The drug incapacitates the tapeworm and loosens its grip on the intestine of the pet. The worms are eventually destroyed during the digestion process. Cestex largely remains at the site of action within the gastrointestinal tract as it is administered orally.
Precautions
This drug should be used only under the supervision or prescription of a licensed veterinarian. Cestex is not recommended for kittens and puppies under 7 weeks of age. Keep the pet clean of fleas and clear out stools to prevent repeated infection. The pet should not come in contact with infected intermediate hosts like snail, rodents etc and should not be fed raw meat or fish. This medicine should not be used in any other animals other than cats and dogs. The safety of administration of this medicine in pregnant and breeding animals is not determined.
Side Effects
Cestex is free from any contraindications and there are no known reactions to other drugs. Cestex is not a cholinesterase inhibitor. Side effects are very rare, and are limited to nausea, diarrhea and trembling.
Dosage Information
It is available in capsule form that is administered orally. Fasting is not required prior to administering this medicine. Recommended dosage is 1.25 mg/lb of body weight for cats 2.5 mg/lb of body weight for dogs. It is available in four different strengths — 12.5 mg, 25 mg, 50mg and 100mg that come in color-coded bottles for easy dispensing. Keep the bottle tightly closed and store at room temperature.
