Indications/Uses
Cephalexin, an antibiotic of the Cephalosporin class, is indicated for the treatment of the bacterial infections of the skin, bones, joints, bladder, pneumonia and respiratory tract in dogs and cats. The medication is used as a low dose antibiotic and may be administered over an extended time period. Cephalosporin, the active ingredient in the medicine, effectively fights against the infectious components.
Precautions
Avoid usage of the medicine in animals allergic to cephalosporin or penicillin. The medication should be used with extreme caution in pregnant and nursing animals, and while administered with probenecid or aminoglycosides like neomycin and gentamicin. It is advised to inform the veterinarian or pharmacist about the medicines the pet is taking. Also, make sure that the treatment is continued, even if the pet is fully recovered from the infections. Great care should be given on the dosage. Over-dosage could lead to adverse side effects. Cephalexin is not effective to fight infections triggered by mites, parasites, viruses or fungi. Also, the medication should not be given more often than directed.
Side Effects
The side effects accompanied with the usage of Cephalexin include loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhea. Allergic reactions including itching, formation of rashes and difficulty in breathing are also observed in pets. Dogs exhibit side effects such as drooling, excitability and rapid breathing, while cats are observed to vomit and develop fever.
Dosage Information
Cephalexin is a prescription drug and the dosage should be chosen with great care. The standard dosage is 10-15 mg/lbs every 8-12 hours orally for both the species. Duration of the treatment may be based on the clinical condition of the pet. While administering the liquid form of the medication, make sure to shake well before measuring the dose.
