Indications/Uses
Centrine acts as an antispasmodic and anticholinergic agent. It is commonly used in veterinary medicine for the treatment of diarrhea, abdominal visceral spasm, vomiting, gastritis and acts as an active agent in the reduction of gastric acid secretion, gastric acidity, and gastric motility.The medication is effective in the reduction of the tone and activity of most portions of the gastro-intestinal tract. Centrine exhibits less powerful mydriatic and salivary side effects than atropine. The active ingredient is Aminopentamide Hydrogen Sulphate.
Precautions
The drug is recommended to be used in cats and dogs only. Centrine should not be used in animals allergic to anticholinergic drugs. Avoid usage of the medicine in animals with stomach obstruction, heart diseases, intestinal obstruction, urinary obstruction, hyperthyroidism, high blood pressure and liver disease. Precaution is required when used with procainamide, benzodiazepine tranquilizers, quinidine, antihistamines, meperidine, and phenothiazines. Thus, it is advised that to inform the veterinarian or pharmacist about what other medications the pet is taking. The medicine should not be used in pets with glaucoma mainly due to the occurrence of mydriasis.
Side Effects
Dryness of the mouth and blurring of vision are the frequently observed side effects. Difficulty in swallowing, constipation, urinary obstruction, seizures, sedation or excitement, abnormal heart rhythm and staggering are observed in the event of overdose.
Dosage Information
Centrine Tabs are meant for oral administration. The standard dosage for dogs and cats up to 10 lbs is 0.5 tablet, 1 tablet for 11 - 20 lbs, 1.5 tablets for 21 - 50 lbs, 2 tablets for 51 - 100 lbs and 2.5 tablets for over 100 lbs. The dosage should be repeated every 8-12 hours. The duration of the dosage depends on the clinical condition of the pet and the development of side effects, if any.
