Indications/Uses
The medication is commonly used as an antispasmodic for the treatment of vomiting, pylorospasm or hypertrophic gastritis, diarrhea and associated nausea. It also acts as an anticholinergic agent for smooth muscle. Aminopentamide Hydrogen Sulfate, the active ingredient, is a strong antispasmodic agent. Aminopentamide Hydrogen Sulfate creates a reduction in gastric secretion, gastric acidity and gastric motility.
Precautions
The medication should not be used in pets with heart diseases, urinary obstruction, liver disease, blood pressure, urinary obstruction and stomach or intestinal obstruction. Extreme caution is required when used with meperidine, antihistamines, procainamide, quinidine, benzodiazepine tranquilizers and phenothiazines. The medication should not be used in animals allergic to anticholinergic drugs. Avoid administering larger doses as this could result in blurring of vision and dryness of mouth. The medication should not be used in animals with known hyposensitivity and tachycardia secondary to cardiac conditions, shock, or thyrotoxicosis. Do not use the medication in pets with glaucoma due to the occurrence of mydriasis. The medication is recommended to be used in dogs and cats only.
Side Effects
Dryness of the mouth is the most commonly observed side effect. In rare instances, side effects like gastrointestinal obstruction, urinary obstruction and ulcerative colitis are reported. The degree of urinary obstruction varies from slight hesitancy in initiating urination to total incapability to urinate. On finding complete inability to urinate, it is advised to discontinue the drug.
Dosage Information
Centrine injection may be administered intramuscularly or subcutaneously every 8-12 hours. The standard dose for dogs and cats up to 10 lbs or less is 0.1 mg, 0.2 mg for 11 - 20 lbs, 0.3 mg for 21 -50 lbs, 0.4 mg for 51 -100 lbs and 0.5 mg for over 100 lbs.
