Indications/Uses
Amoxi-tab is a wide spectrum, penicillin based antibiotic, which is commonly used to treat a variety of bacterial infections like respiratory infections, skin and soft tissue diseases, urinary tract and gastro intestinal infections among others in dogs and cats.It can be used only in suspected bacterial infections as it is not effective for viral and parasitic infections. Amoxidrops is a popular medication in pets as it is easy to administer and is readily absorbed by body tissues.
Precautions
Amoxi-tabs should not be used in animals reared for milk and meat and those with penicillin allergies. If the animal fails to respond even after five days, the treatment method should be reconsidered. Amoxi-tabs might interact with other medications like chloramphenicol and tetracycline; hence the current medication details of the pet should be given to the veterinarian to verify chances of any adverse side effects with amoxicillin.
Side Effects
While Amoxi-tabs are relatively safe when administered under a veterinarian, it might trigger a few side effects in some animals. It is normal for some animals to develop diarrhea during the treatment with Amoxi-tabs, which happens because of the sudden change in the bacterial presence of the pet's intestinal tract. However, if diarrhea persists it might be a symptom of colitis or intestinal infections, which should be notified to the veterinarian. Loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting are some other common side effects.
Dosage Information
Amoxi-tabs are highly stable in the presence of gastric acid and hence could be even administered along with food. They are available in various strengths from 50mg- 400mg. The recommended dose for dogs ranges from 5 to 12 mg per pound (10 to 25 mg/kg), two or three times a day. The duration depends on the severity of the infection and the response of the animal.
