Indications/Uses
Aminophylline/Aminophylline injection is a bronchodilator used to treat breathing problems such as asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema. A bronchodilator is essentially used to open air passages in the lungs by relaxing the smooth muscle of the lung, thus making it easier for pets to breathe. The drug is a combination of theophylline and ethylenediamine in 2:1 ratio. Quite often, Aminophylline is used to treat bronchial asthma in humans as well as pets including dogs and cats.
Precautions
Aminophylline/Aminophylline injection should not be prescribed for animals with hypersensitivity or allergy to the drug. The drug should be used with extreme caution in animals with liver or heart disease. Aminophylline has the possibility to interact with numerous other medications such as ketoconazole, rifampin, diuretics, calcium channel blockers, cimetidine, corticosteroids and ephedrine. Consult the veterinarian to determine if the other medication the pet is taking has the possibility to interact with aminophylline.
Side Effects
The probable side effects of an over-dose of Aminophylline/Aminophylline injection include anxiety, nervousness and temporary excitement. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, excessive ingestion of food and increased frequency of urination are some of the other side effects of the drug.
