Indications/Uses

Aminophylline is essentially a bronchodilator used in the treatment of diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema. Aminophylline is a combination of theophylline and ethylenediamine in 2:1 ratio. Aminophylline relaxes the lung and chest muscles enables more air to enter the chest and lungs, reduces the sensitivity of lungs to allergens and various other substances which cause inflammation, and enhances the contractions of diaphragm to enable the entry of more air into the lungs. Quite often, it is prescribed for pets with heart and lung conditions such as asthma and allergies.

Precautions

Aminophylline should not be used in animals with hypersensitivity or allergy to the drug. The drug should be used with extreme care in animals suffering from liver or heart disease. Aminophylline might interact with several other medications such as ketoconazole, rifampin, diuretics, calcium channel blockers, cimetidine, corticosteroids and ephedrine. Consult the veterinarian to determine if the other medication the pet is taking has the possibility to interact with aminophylline.

Side Effects

The probable side effects of an over-dose of Aminophylline/Aminophylline injection include anxiety, nervousness and temporary excitement. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, excessive ingestion of food and increased frequency of urination are some of the other side effects of the drug.

Dosage Information

Aminophylline is usually available in 100 mg and 200 mg immediate-release tablets, and as a 105 mg/5 ml oral liquid. Injectable aminophylline is available in a 250 mg/10 ml concentration. Aminophylline is also available as 250 mg and 500 mg suppositories. This medication should not be used in pregnant or nursing animals. The usual dose in dogs is 3-5mg/pound by mouth every 8 hours. The usual dose in cats is 2.25mg/pound by mouth every 8 to 12 hours. The pet should be given lots of water. Do not administer more than what is advised by the veterinarian. Avoid missing doses.
