Albon Liquid 5%

Generic Name

Sulfadimethoxine

Indications/Uses

Albon, a sulfadimethoxine antibacterial treatment, is used for sulfadimethoxine sensitive treatment in dogs and cats. Albon Liquid 5% is chiefly indicated for the treatment of respiratory, genitourinary tract, enteric, anal gland and soft tissue infections in dogs and cats. The medication is effective for the treatment of respiratory ailments like bronchitis, pneumonia and tonsillitis. The medication fights infectious organisms like streptococci, escherichia, klebsiella, proteus, shigella, staphylococci and salmonella. Sulfadimethoxine is the active ingredient in the medication.

Precautions

Make sure that the pet drinks adequate water during the treatment period. Lack of water intake could result in adverse side effects. If the pet shows no improvement within 2 -3 days, it is advised to go over the diagnosis. Do not administer more medicine than directed; also make sure not to miss any doses. The medicine should be stored at controlled room temperature (15°–30°C). Ensure that the treatment is continued even after the disappearance of the clinical signs. It is a must that therapeutically effective sulfonamide levels be maintained in the body during the treatment period. Sulfadimethoxine is not efficient for the treatment of viral or rickettsial infections

Side Effects

In rare instances, the medicine exhibits side effects like vomiting, facial swelling, diarrhea, dry eye, upset stomach, loss of appetite, excessive thirst and excessive urination.

Dosage Information

The recommended daily dosage is 12.5 mg/lb (27.5 mg/kg) of animal body weight. The initial dosage for dogs and cats should be 1 teaspoonful Albon Liquid 5% per 10 lb of body weight (25 mg/lb or 55 mg/kg). Administer 0.5 of the medication per 10 lb of body weight (12.5 mg/lb or 27.5 mg/kg) every 24 hours subsequently. A treatment of 3-5 days is adequate; however, the duration is based on the clinical response.
