Q&A on Kennel Cough

This is 3rd time I've sent tis quest: please...

... tell me difference between Kennel Cough and collapsed trachea and need for more Lasix. 3 vets differ in diog. THANKS

Kennel cough is an infection. A collapsing trachea is a mechanical problem with the cartilage in the trachea. The caltilage actually collapses periodicaly. You went to 3 vets and none of them could tell you the difference????? An x-ray may help in a diagnosis. vetcare

We are a Animal Shelter in Ct in the last co...

...uple months we hat lots of Kennel cough,Parvo , Kitten Distemper, 1 we hat 4 Kittens that was dignost with Distemper, 1 Kitten has some problems walking , eading good playing, the others are normal playing everything fine, ther now for 3 weeks fine could ther have now ther first shot or not. now about the Kennel Cough it would be good the give them the Vac, when ther come in, we want to doing that our self because our Vets are so money hungry

I beg to differ about vets being money hungry. Maybe if you had more vets in your shelter, vaccinating and caring for the animals they would'nt be dying. All the animals should be vaccinated when they walk through the door. vetcare

we just adopted a 18 month old pup. she is...

... very well behaved except when our other two dogs are out we have tried one at atime ... their first meeting was at a doggie park she fine with them in our truck but she tries to bite them when we are in the house. we need some suggestion on stoping the behaier .. also she is recovering from Kennel Cough could that be part of the problem? thank you for your time. sincerly ]kelley

I do not think the kennel cough is part of the problem. Your new dog is probably not used to being around other dogs or is a dominant dog. The more you expose and socialize the dogs together, the better. Give it time. vetcare

I took my six year old dog to get his annual...

... vaccinations on Friday. By Monday he had developed a serious cough. He coughs every few minutes. I was wondering if he could have contracted something from the vet's office or if this is a reaction to the vaccinations. He only had injections and none of the vaccinations were given through his nose. What is Kennel cough? Could my dog have that from visiting the vet's office? Instead, could this be a reaction to a vaccination? Thanks for the response.

You dog might of caught something at the vet. Call the office and tell them they should give you some FREE medication.

Our Min Pin was recently boarded at our usua...

...l vet/kennel for 14 days. When we returned we noticed he sounded abit hoarse when he barked. He is a BIG barker, barking at other dogs, people, animals....so we did not think too much of this at first. After a week home, he acts normal but still seems a bit hoarse when barking. He was up to date on all his Kennel Cough shots & I do not think it is that. Any thoughts?

Has he been able to rest his bark? If not then it may take longer for him to feel better. Why don't you have him checked by your vet to be on the safe side. vetcare

how do you cure kennel cough? and is this co...

Kennel cough is viral and bacterial. The bacteria is killed with antibiotics. You just have to wait for the virus to go away. It is similiar to the common cold in a human. Yes, it is contagious. vetcare

I have a 12 week old boston terrier that i g...

...ot when it was 8 weeks old. She had a upper respitory infection with green nose discharge and a cough when I got her. My vet gave her clavomox for the infection and robitussin dm. he says she sounds good and the discharge is gone. But her cough is still there. I take her to the vet every week. he says it could be Kennel Cough. but its been 4 weeks. I asked if it could be something else and my be we should take xrays or tests. But he just keeps saying give it one more week and then maybe. just how long can Kennel Cough last? And can it last for two months or longer?

The cough from "kennel cough" can take several weeks to clear up. If your vet is not concerned then I would not be either. vetcare

I sometimes see coughing in reaction to the kennel cough vaccine. I usually do not see vomiting and constipation. If the problem persists then I recommend a vet visit. vetcare

I recently brought home a puppy with Kennel ...

...Cough, and now my other dog (11 mos old) seems to be hacking- what should I do? Can I give her the same medicine?

I do not recommend that you give her the same meds. Kennel cough is contagious but it usually goes away with out treatment in older animals. It is almost like the common cold in a human. If it does not get better in the next few days I recommend that you call your vet. Vetcare

Kennel Cough

Catching Kennel Cough
Shep always seemed to come home with kennel cough after a stay at a dog boarding facility. Much like kids in day care, when dogs go to kennels, they’re often prone to catching kennel cough. Kennel cough is commonly caused by bacteria called Bordetella. Other causes of kennel cough might be parainfluenza or adenovirus viruses.
Signs of Kennel Cough
A dog with kennel cough has a dry, hacking cough for a few days. The coughing is sometimes accompanied by sneezing or gagging. He may cough more after exercise. Dogs with kennel cough seem to cough constantly over the course of several days, but they may not have any other signs. Infections typically are not serious, can last up to three weeks, but do not usually progress in severity. Sometimes, more than one type of infectious microorganism causes the irritation of the dog’s trachea and bronchii.
Prevention and Treatment
Like a cold virus is very contagious to humans, kennel cough is very contagious to dogs. It is called kennel cough (also known as infectious tracheobronchitis) because it shows up more often in dogs that are closely confined, such as in the kennel environment, a dog show or even a veterinary clinic. But a dog might also pick it up from another dog through a groomer or at a park dog run. Also, much like people and colds, the infection usually resolves on its own.
An injection vaccination as well as nasal spray containing the Bordetella agent is available to vaccinate dogs against the bacteria. However, this vaccine would have no effect on kennel cough resulting from another source like parainfluenza. If your dog routinely comes into close contact with other dogs, such as at dog shows or in a boarding facility, you may wish to consider getting him vaccinated. Because the dog’s body needs time to build immunity to the vaccination, make sure you get him vaccinated a few weeks prior to his possible exposure.
Regarding treatment for kennel cough, most dogs don’t show much in the way of signs beyond a cough. They typically maintain their usual behavior of normal sleeping, eating or playing. Because a cough can be a sign of other problems, like heart disease or heart worms, your veterinarian should examine the dog, even if you’re sure it is kennel cough.
The veterinarian will determine the cause of the dog’s cough by examination, history and ruling out other issues. Kennel cough might be treated except with the use of cough suppressant to ease coughs or antibiotics for a bacterial infection.
If your dog has kennel cough, even if your veterinarian decides that no medication is necessary, your dog should be back to his old self in about three weeks. Just allow him some time to rest and stay warm and comfortable.
