Basset Hound

History

The origin of the Basset Hound can be traced to 6th century France. The name has been derived from the French word “Basset”, meaning low-set. Believed to have been descended from the famed St. Hubert hounds, the Basset Hound is considered to be the most beautiful and unusual of all hound dogs.

Appearance

The Basset Hounds are rather large and bulky breed of dogs, which is because they possess more bones for their size than any other breed of dogs. The Basset Hound’s coat colors are distributed all over the body in no particular pattern, and they usually come in tri-color (a combination of black, white and tan) or red-and-white (a lighter red-and-white may be called lemon-and-white).

Personality

An intelligent and stubborn breed of dog, the Basset Hounds are okay with other pets. They are gentle, easygoing, and are loyal and devoted to their owners. They are well mannered with children

Health Concerns

Generally a healthy breed of dog, the Basset Hounds are prone to few hereditary diseases such as glaucoma, hypothyroidism, thrombopathia, von Willebrand’s disease, patellar luxation, hip and elbow dysplasia, and are also susceptible to eyelid and eyelash problems. Basset Hounds may also be susceptible to allergies, seborrhea and dermatitis.
