Alsatian
History
Some people believe that Alsatian’s lineage can be traced back to the Roman times. However, the modern breed’s lineage is linked to Hordand von Grafrath, the first dog to be recognized as an Alsatian in April 1899. This breed of dog is one of the world’s most popular single breed of dog. During World War I, the German army used the Alsatian for a variety of tasks.
Appearance
The Alsatian is a mid-sized dog breed. This breed of dog has erect ears and a sweeping tail, and is about two feet at the shoulders and a little longer body. Due to the muscular body and agility it is regarded as the world’s best all-round working dog. There are two versions of this breed — the short haired breed and the long haired breed. The coat usually comes in black and tan, black, or white color.
Personality
The Alsatian is a very intelligent and hard working dog breed. It is easily trainable to perform a variety of tasks. Courage and loyalty are the traits of a true Alsatian. Though widely used as a police dog, it is not that aggressive. Alsatian loves the company of its people, and hates to be left alone. Being a very energetic breed of dog, it should be kept engaged in some activity or task.
Health Concerns
The Alsatian may develop hereditary problems like hip and elbow malformations. Some of the other health problems this breed of dog is prone to are congenital heart problems and skin allergies.
