Maine Coon Cat

History

Maine coon cats are mysterious, legendary and amusing all at once. There are several mysterious and interesting legends surrounding its origin. A popular story of origin is that it is a cross between the semi wild domestic cats and raccoons. However, most breeders believe that Maine coon cats were derived from the mating between the shorthaired domestic cats and overseas long hairs. Widely known for its beauty and elegance, it is a native, American long haired cat with excellent mousing talents. Considered to be an ideal bred for a curious novice owner, the Maine coon cats are the oldest natural breeds of North America.

Appearance

The most prominent features of a Maine coon cat are its peculiar head and body and the shag of its coat. Basically a strong healthy cat, Main coon cats have a concave profile. It has a heavy glossy coat that is weather resistant. The coat is longer on the ruff and shorter on the back and neck. It also has heavily furred ears. To suit the harsh winter climate, this breed has big, round tufted feet, often referred to as snow shoes. It also has long square muzzles and large eyes.

Personality

Their relaxed, easygoing and playful nature makes them a most sought after companion for kids and other species. Maine coon cats also have a gentle and affectionate temperament with a great level of intelligence and are not overly pestering.

Health Concerns

Male Maine coon cats weigh almost 13 to 18 pounds and the females weigh 9 to 12 pounds. Genetic health problems are common in this breed. Incidence of gum disease is higher and heart and liver ailments occur at times. However, the most common inherited health problem is hip dysplasia.
