Korat

History

Believed to be the native of Siam in Thailand, Korats are widely known as the ‘si-sawat’ cat. Thais consider korats to be the harbingers of fortune and gift them to brides on the occasion of their marriage. Korats made their entry into England during the late 19th century. Often referred to as the ‘silver-blue cats with the Thai passport’, korats, with their expressive peridot green eyes and an intense gaze, are sure to catch the eyes of every cat fancier.

Appearance

Korats have medium sized, but well built muscular bodies with broad chest and a single layered blue coat with a silver tipping. They have a heart shaped head and large green luminescent eyes. Ears are prominent and held high on the head. The tail is moderately long and tapers to a rounded tip. The presence of a kink is noted in the tail of some korats- this is considered a symbol of added luck in Thailand.

Personality

Korats are strong willed cats with specific likes and dislikes. These cats demand a lot of attention from the owner. Korats are good companions and bond well with almost all other species. However, they are highly selective in their choice of companionship. Korats are communicative about their needs and therefore easy to instruct. They are also easily trainable, faithful, intelligent and affectionate. They adapt well to any environment and tend to become the leader of the herd. It takes a firm approach to train a Korat.

Health Concerns

Overfeeding can lead to the development of fat pads along the underside of a korat, which are often mistaken as mammary tumors. The female korats weigh between 6 and 8 pounds and the males from 8 to 10 pounds.
