Shih Tzu
History
A favorite with the ancient Chinese emperors, the Shih Tzus (meaning ‘chrysanthemum-faced dog’) are the original descendants of Tibetan temple dogs, which were bred 2000 years ago. The Shih Tzu’s made their presence in England during the 1930’s. During the World War II, the American soldiers took them to the United States.
Appearance
Glamorous in appearance, the Shih Tzu possesses a long, flowing mane-like coat, a round head with abundant beard and mustache, a short hairy muzzle, black nose, hanging ears covered with hair, big, round, slightly protruding eyes, straight muscular legs, well-padded feet and a thick tail curled over the back. Interestingly, their hair above their nose grows upward giving them a charming ‘chrysanthemum face’!
Personality
Highly active, vigilant and extremely intelligent, the Shih Tzu is renowned for its majestic, refined and courageous qualities, which makes it an excellent family pet and a good watchdog. The Shih Tzu is clever and adamant and turns grumpy if it is irritated or surprised. Basically, they like indoor activities and love to be in the company of other people and pets. Although playful and gentle, the Shih Tzu barks excessively and can sometimes turn snappish with toddlers and babies. The Shih Tzu is extremely confident, obedient, curious, lovable and gentle and is a good companion for older children.
Health Concerns
The major health disorders which affect the Shih Tzu are Renal Dysplasia, slipped stifles or kneecaps, wheezing problems, Spinal disc disease and eye injuries.
