Poodle
History
With an origin that can be traced back to almost 400 years, the Poodle breed was a royal favorite during the 19th century. Poodle derives its name from the German word ‘Pudel’, which means ‘one who plays in the water’. A poodle is believed to be the descendant of the now nearly extinct French water dog species. The popularity of the poodles in France fetched them the name French poodle, though in France they are commonly referred to as ‘caniche’ or duck dog. Poodles are usually groomed in three different styles.
Appearance
The dog has profuse curly coat with long, flat drooping ears, a long head, a round skull and a square silhouette. Its delightful spring like gait makes it even more attractive. It also possesses webbed feet and arched toes.
Personality
Poodles are pleasant, perky and lively creatures with a remarkable level of intelligence. Quick learning ability and innate showmanship are just a few of the many features of this variety. This breed is rather friendly and gets along well with other breeds as well as older children. Certain varieties of this breed can be high strung and timid.
Health Concerns
Ear infections, runny eyes, digestive tract disorders, heart and skin ailments are commonly seen in this breed. Slipped stifle, PRA and IMHA (Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia) are also often reported in this breed. The average life expectancy of this breed comes up to 12 to 15 years or more.
