German Shepherd Dog
History
The origin of German Shepherd Dog can be traced to the late 1800s when Capt Max von Stephenitz from Germany began a line with the breed Hordand von Grafrath with a focus on many desirable traits. German Shepherd dog could be called a war hero mainly because of its participation in First and Second World Wars. Gradually the breed became a hero in the Hollywood too. The dog, bred for the best qualities, was used by both the Germans and Allies on battlefronts. The breed is an expert in sheep herding, search and rescue missions, and as a guide dog for the blind.
Appearance
The German Shepherd dog has a well-built, slightly elongated body with erect ears, straight forelegs, almond shaped eyes, sweeping tail and a wedge shaped head that is proportional to its bodyweight. The tail is carried hanging in a gentle curve. The breed comes in a variety of colors (two tones and solid colors) and patterns.
Personality
German Shepherd dogs are known for their high level of intelligence. The breed tends to become aggressive and dangerous, if raised improperly. Proper training makes the German Shepherd dog amiable to children and other pets. The breed prefers company and should not be left alone, and is found happiest when busy with some activity or task.
Health Concerns
The breed is an easy pick for hereditary problems like elbow and hip dysplasia, congenital heart problems and skin allergies.
