Dalmatian

History

Tracing the origin of the Dalmatians could end up nowhere. When many attribute the origin to Dalmatia, a region on the Adriatic Sea north of Albania, other sources claim it to be India. Evidences supporting the existence of the breed as far back as 3000 BC are also unearthed by historians. There are also evidences that support the existence of the dog in the Vatican in the 16th century. The Dalmatians were first recognized by AKC in 1888.

Appearance

The puppies are all white at the time of birth and develop their spots within 10 – 14 days. It has a spotted short coat with black or liver brown spots and a muscular body with straight legs, well arched toes, powerful muzzle, high-set drop ears and a tail with a slight upward curve.

Personality

The Dalmatian is known as an alert, energetic, strong, active, intelligent and muscular breed. Dalmatians are friendly in nature; however, they tend to remain aloof with strangers. Known for their guarding instincts, the breed serves as a perfect guard dog. Dalmatians crave owner attention and are prone to exhibit separation anxiety when left alone.

Health Concerns

The breed is susceptible to health conditions like urinary stones, skin allergies and hip dysplasia. Statistics reveal that 10 – 12% of all Dalmatians are born deaf. The average life expectancy of Dalmatians is 11 – 13 years.
