Cocker Spaniel

History

Believed to be originated in the United Kingdom, American Cocker Spaniel was brought to United States and Canada by the late 1800s. Belonging to the sporting breed of dogs, the American Cocker Spaniels were registered in the AKC Stud Book in the early 1900s. American Cocker Spaniels, one of the most popular breeds in the United States, were bred as hunting dogs.

Appearance

The American Cocker Spaniel stands out from the rest with its unique features like hanging ears, rounded head and dark expressive eyes. It has a silky, feathered, medium-length coat and comes in three colors- solid black, any solid color other than black and multicolored or patchy. An adult male is 15 inches tall and weighs 18 – 28 pounds.

Personality

The temperament of American Cocker Spaniel is basically joyful and outgoing. The breed is friendly with children and other pets. However, socialization at an earlier age could avoid their tendency for timidity. Basically a loyal dog, the breed is sensitive, cheerful, easily trained and adaptable.
