Chesapeake Bay Retriever
History
Named after the Chesapeake Bay, where a large number of retriever dogs are found to exist, the Chesapeake retriever is an excellent breed of retriever dogs. It is a cross between the English Newfoundland and local retrievers of Maryland, which happened subsequent to a shipwreck in 1807.
Appearance
This breed has a peculiar body structure with a muscular body, broad round head and an ordinary muzzle. Their well-boned foreleg and hind legs with webbed toes gifts them the ability to swim even in frosty waters. Proper exercise is a must for this breed. They come with short, wavy coats in shades of brown red and tan. They have yellow eyes and small downward ears.
Personality
The strong will and determination and the excellent territorial instincts of this dog is worth mentioning. It is normally hostile to strangers and other breeds and call for training to get socialized. However, it has a playful nature, which makes it a great companion for kids. It has an affectionate and protective temperament. Though not a quick learner, this breed is highly active and can be an excellent family dog. It takes an experienced and consistent owner to train them.
Health Concerns
With an average life span of 10 to 14 years, the Chesapeake retrievers do not have too many pressing health issues. However, hip dysplasia and hereditary eye problems may sometimes occur.
