Bull Terrier

History

A cross breed of the Bulldog and the Old English Terrier, the Bull Terrier was originally bred for bull baiting. However, in course of time, the Bull Terrier became a favorite with the aristocratic classes.

Appearance

The Bull Terrier has a short, thick coat with a strikingly awesome combination of colors; pure white, black, brindle, red, or fawn in color. Its head is flat at the top and slopes down proportionately till the end of the nose. The dog has small, attractive, dark, almond-shaped eyes and a horizontal tail. There are two main varieties of Bull Terriers: White ones and colors other than white. The average height of the breed ranges from 22 inches and it weighs from 52 to 65 pounds.

Personality

The Bull Terrier is well-known for its courage, agility, loyalty, and speed. Bull Terriers possess a special kind of inborn preventive instinct, by which they defend their owner in needful circumstances. A brave, fun-loving and active dog, the Bull Terrier is quite faithful and obedient to its owner, thus making it an extremely good companion and a family pet. Bull Terriers are highly protective, determined and show enmity towards other animals. As a result, Bull Terriers are not recommended with other pets. The dog hates being teased and would find it rather tough to cope with children.

Health Concerns

The normal life span of a Bull Terrier usually ranges from 10 to 14 years. The common health problems which affect Bull Terriers are obsessive compulsive behaviors, such as tail chasing, slipped kneecaps and susceptibility to fleas or various other parasites.
