Border Collie

History

Believed to have originated in the British Isles, Border Collie is the descendant of old British droving breeds including Bearded Collie, Harlequin, Bob-tailed Sheepdog and Smithfield. The origin of the breed could be traced back to the British Isles. The dog was registered by AKC in the year 1995.

Appearance

The dog has a flat skull, dark brown oval eyes, long tail that reaches to the hock and a muzzle that tapers to the black nose. Border Collie is 22 inches tall and weighs 44 pounds. Its thick coat is seen in colors like black and white, red and white, tri-color, black and grey and all black.

Personality

Considered one among the most intelligent dog breeds, Border Collie is known for its obedience, stamina and agility. It is believed that this outstanding herder has an eye that can hypnotize cattle. The breed is not friendly with other dogs of the same sex and cats, and has a tendency to get aggressive at the pokes and prods of children. The breed demands extensive regular exercise and great attention.

Health Concerns

The breed is prone to health conditions like hip dysplasia, joint problems, deafness, eye problems, epilepsy, and Ceroid Lipofuscinosis. Collie Eye Anomaly is a common eye disease observed in Collies.
