Indications for Lincomycin (Lincocin 200mg)

Lincomycin is an antibiotic indicated for use in veterinary medicine for treating infections caused by gram-positive pathogens. The drug has been highly effective in the management of infections, especially those caused by staphylococcus and streptococcus bacteria and affecting skin, upper respiratory, bones and teeth. The medication also finds use in treating dermatitis, bite wounds, abscesses and even pneumonitis in dogs and cats. Lincomycin is an active antibiotic that resists bacterial infections by suppressing protein formation and accumulation in the body of the animal. In certain cases the drug is also used as an effective remedy for coliform bacteria. The medication is available only by prescription and comes in tablets, injection and Aquadrops.

Precautions when using Lincomycin (Lincocin 200mg)

In no case should the drug be administered in the animal without the prior consent from a veterinarian. Also the medication is highly restricted to use in dogs and cats alone, and must never be tried on hamsters, rabbits, guinea pigs and horses. As with all drugs, lincocin 200mg too should not be used in animals with allergic reactions to the drug. Use with caution when given with certain other medications, as there is a possibility that lincocin might interact. Do not use the medication in animals with monilial infections.

Side Effects of Lincomycin (Lincocin 200mg)

Though not serious, the medication has its share of side effects. Medication overdose may cause loose bowels and vomiting in dogs and cats. In addition, it is seen that certain animals develop loss of appetite once the medication is administered. Severe reaction calls for immediate medical assistance. However, there has not been any instance of pain or inflammation when the drug is injected.

As the condition causing the disease might differ, the dose and frequency of medication might also vary. However, the usual dosage of the medication is 7-15mg/lbs every 8-12 hours. Continue the medication for a period as instructed by the veterinarian.
