Precautions when using
Chloramphenicol Tablets (VicetonTabs)
This antibiotic contains a chemical structure (nitrobenzene group) typical to a group of drugs recognized to cause depress hematopoietic activity of the bone marrow. In vitro-tissue culture studies that have been done using canine bone marrow cells have shown that very high concentrations of chloramphenicol reduces both uptake of iron by the nucleated red cells and incorporation of iron into heme. Because of the prolonged recovery time, avoid administering products containing chloramphenicol with or two hours prior to the induction of general anesthesia with pentobarbital. Dogs maintained for breeding purposes should not be treated with chloramphenicol products. Studies on experimental animals treated with chloramphenicol have shown that animals, especially females, experience significant disorders in morphology as well as in function of the gonads.
