Indications for Amozicillin (Amoxi Drops)

Amoxi Drops is a semi-synthetic penicillin commonly used in cats and dogs for treating a wide range of diseases like respiratory infections, wounds, skin infections, tooth abscesses etc. It is a broad spectrum antibiotic, which is found effective against many strains of gram positive and gram negative bacteria including H. influenzae, N. gonorrhoea, E. coli, Pneumococci, Streptococci etc. Amoxidrops is a popular medication in cats and dogs for its easy administration, ready absorption and flexibility of administration with or without food. As it is not potent against penicillinase, Amoxi Drops cannot be used to treat infections caused by staphylococci, Pseudomonas and most strains of Klebsiella and Enterobacter. It is also not useful in the treatment viral and parasitic attacks. Trihydrate makes up the active ingredient in Amoxi drops.

Precautions when using Amozicillin (Amoxi Drops)

This medication should not be used without the prescription of a licensed veterinarian. Make sure that Amoxi Drops is not used in animals that are allergic to penicillin or on animals reared for meat as amoxicillin has protein binding properties. It might react with certain medications such as allopurinol and erythromycin, so furnish the medication details of the animal to the vet before starting treatment.

Side Effects of Amozicillin (Amoxi Drops)

As Amoxidrop is semisynthetic penicillin it can produce the typical penicillin allergic reactions in animals with symptoms like rashes, fever, swelling of face or limbs, labored breathing, rapid heartbeat etc. Administering epinephrine or steroids is found to be beneficial to counter these hypersensitive symptoms. Other side effects while administering Amoxi-Drop might include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea; which demands urgent medical aid.

Dosage for Amozicillin (Amoxi Drops)

The veterinary oral suspension of Amoxi-Drops is presented in 15ml and 30ml bottles and the recommended dose for dogs is 5 mg/lb of body weight to be given twice daily for 5-7 days. For cats, an ideal dosage would be 50 mg (5-10 mg/lb).
