indications for Heartgard for Cats

Ivermectin is an anthelminthic or dewormer used for preventing heartworms, hookworms and roundworms in cats. It is available as unflavored tablets and flavored chewable, and as a heartgard plus variety. Besides this, it is also used for treating skin parasites, gastrointestinal parasites and parasites present in the bloodstream. Ivermectin for cats acts against parasites like heartworms, hookworms and roundworms, killing them by causing them neurological damages. It eliminates the tissue stage of heartworm larvae (Dirofilaria immitis). Ivermectin for cats also effectively controls and removes Ancylostoma tubaeforme and A. braziliense, two kinds of hookworms.

Precautions

Before administering the medicine, check for hypersensitivity of cats to its ingredients. Conduct a test for presence of heartworms in the cat before commencing the treatment. Good hygiene and personal care is necessary when administering this medication, as there are chances of humans contracting hookworms.

Dosage

Administer the medication orally once a month for a whole year for the treatment of roundworms. Over dosage may cause symptoms of disorientation, tremors, lack of coordination, and blindness. In cats weighing 5 pounds or less, the usual dosage is 55mcg. If the cat weighs between 6-15 pounds, a dosage of 165mcg would be required. Make sure the cat does not merely swallow the chewable tablets. In cats, heartworm infestations can be prevented by administering a dose of 0.012 mg per pound once in a month. Ensure completion of treatment, as there are chances of relapse if otherwise. The ideal time for administration is the mosquito season when the heartworm larvae are active in mosquitoes.
