PetCareRx is pleased to feature training articles written by the great people at ECAD (Educated Canines Assisting with Disabilities). This wonderful organization breeds, raises, educates, and deploys the best assistance dogs in the world to support the needs of people, especially veterans, with serious disabilities.

These assistance dogs–primarily Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, and Lab/Golden mixed breeds–do many things to help their owners live more safely and with greater independence. They pick up dropped objects, retrieve prosthetic limbs, remind their owners to take medicine, help them walk, and calm them when they're anxious.

LEARN 20 COMMANDS IN 20 WEEKS

ECAD is sharing their expertise in a series that helps you train your dog. These 20 Essential Commands cover everything from house training your puppy to teaching them to play fetch. Learn how to make your pooch a well-behaved pet.

MORE ABOUT ECAD

Disabled veterans are not the only beneficiaries of this program. ECAD also educates dogs to assist children with specific needs such as autism and sleep apnea. ECAD even made history when one of their dogs helped a traumatized child give testimony in court. That dog, Rosie, was named one of Cesar Millan's top ten dogs of 2011. ECAD strives to place more assistance dogs each year, and to continually explore new ways the human-canine bond can be enhanced.
