About Sucralfate
Sucralfate is a gastro-protectant medication designed to battle painful ulcers that can develop in the mouth, throat, esophagus, and intestines of cats and dogs due to many conditions (ex. Cancer and kidney or liver failure). It stops further damage to ulcers, by working together with hydrochloric acid, also known as stomach acid, to create a coating that surrounds the ulcer, and stops ulcers from being further damaged by acids and enzymes that are naturally produced in dogs and cats. Sucralfate also works as a preventive mechanism against ulcers by plugging up any holes in the linings of the esophagus and intestine before ulcers can form, and also stimulates mucus production to absorb the bile acids that can create ulcers. Sucralfate is like a bandage that you can put around your pets ulcers to help them heal and prevent further damage.
Key Benefits of Sucralfate
  • Creates a protective seal around ulcers
  • Prevents new ulcers from forming
  • Recommended by most veterinarians
Who's Sucralfate For?

Rated 5 out of 5 This medication is a lifesaver! I have a 10 month old Saint Bernard that has megaesophagus. She had a feeding tube placed since her esophagus essentially doesn't work, but I noticed she was developing a cough. After a visit with her internal medicine specialist, she was started on this medication for esophagitis - inflammation of the esophagus because she doesn't get any food by mouth. She gets one tablet, 3 times a day in a slurry orally, and she has done WONDERFUL on it. No coughing, not dry mouth, or ulcerations anymore. This fairly cheap medication has improved her quality of life, and makes her so much more comfortable. I will keep her on this medication for the rest of her life. June 6, 2011

Rated 4 out of 5 The difference in my dog is night and day My dog has been on Carafate since I got her from the pound last year. I tried taking her off the medication for a week and started noticing a difference by day three. I'll not do that again. She may be old, but if a pill can make her confortable so be it. July 28, 2007
