Rated 2 out of 5 by chopper Not so great features
I have three Emperor Power Filters. Two 400's and one 280. The one plus is the Filter Cartridges have great capacity. The negitives are the filter cartridges lose the Black Diamond Carbon through the ribbed backing putting unwanted carbon in the tanks, also the carbon gets in the Flow Manifold Housing causing noise and I assume wearing out the Impeller and also the carbon gets inside the Spray Bars causing them to plugup more frequently. Also the filter will not prime itself if the water level is just down slightly. Also requires time consuming maintainance too often due to the Spray Bars plugging up and disassembling and putting back together. All in all I'd give it a two on a scale of one to five.

Rated 5 out of 5 by LargeKoiPond Still running after 15 years!
This filter cleans my 55 gallon excellent. With only 3 old catfish left the Emperor does the job. This filter is over 15 years old and I replace the filter media as expected and change the impeller about every 3-4 years and that helps a lot with the filtration of the system. Cleaning the whole filter occasionally helps with the water movement also. If I had to purchase another filter the Emperor is what I would buy.

Rated 1 out of 5 Emperor filters have lost their way
I have used their products for many years as I run multiple tanks in my house. Unfortunately the quality is gone form these products. My filters are extremely inconsistent and very noisy. After replacing a 10 year old emperor i decided it was time and i was disappointed from the start. They sent me replacement filters and I still have the same issues. Except for one amazing rep at the company the rest are in denial and refuse to accept the issues in design. I would no longer use there filters until the engineers accept the problems and attempt to fix them.

Rated 3 out of 5 by MercMan Great Features, But Lacking One Important Feature
This filter has great capacity, and I love the separate chemical filtration chambers.
The reason I would not recommend this product:
The complete inability of this filter to self-prime. Whenever I do a water change I wind up dumping 7 or 8 cups of water in the filter after I start it to get it going. I would hate to be out of town and have a power outage with this filter, since it would be unable to restart itself, which would likely kill off the bacteria in the Bio-wheel and possibly harm the tank's inhabitants, and the bio wheel was one of the reasons I purchased this filter initally.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Turtleman This product works extremely well
I have had numerous filters for our Turtle Tank. It too numerous filters to keep the 60 gallan tank clean. Within a day and a half of getting the empreror 400, the water in the tank became crystal clear. We have removed the other filters and the water remains crystal clear. Excellent product. Recommend to all.

I have a 55 gallon tank and am currently cycling it with feeder goldfish. I have a 350 filter and thought it was doing a good job, but I'm a fool for filtration, so I bought an Emperor 400. I'll tell you, I thought that my tank was clear before, but since I've put the 400 in, it's so crystal clear it's unbelievable. The first couple of days it was a little bit noisy, but I found that the spray arms that turn the bio-wheels were a little bit loose and after I tightened them, it got very quiet. I'd recommend this filter to anybody, any time, any where. You won't be disappointed.
