History
A natural breed, the Turkish Van owes its origin to the Lake Van region of Turkey. References to ‘white ringtail’ cats in history prove the existence of this breed in Anatolio more than thousands of years ago. However, the breed was brought to the United States only in 1982.
Appearance
Turkish Van is a large, semi-longhaired cat with distinct colored markings on the head and tail. It has a water-resistant coat with a cashmere texture. The breed has a muscular body with deep chests and wide shoulders, long, brush-like tail and large ears with slightly pointed tips. An average male weighs around 10–13 pounds and the females weigh about half of that. The oval shaped eyes come in a variety of colors including amber, blue or odd eyed with pink rims. The coat is usually cream or white in color.

Personality
Turkish Van is known for its fascination with water. This unusual trait of the breed gained them the nickname – ‘Swimming Cats’. They are highly energetic, intelligent and love to play. Turkish Van is one among the ancient breeds, and is considered regional treasures in their homeland.

Turkish Van is a natural breed with comparatively less health issues. The average life expectancy of the breed is 10–12 years.
