History

Referred as a man-made breed, the Tonkinese is the outcome of the crossbreeding between the Siamese and Burmese. The Canadian breeder, Margaret Conroy, crossed a seal point Siamese with a sable Burmese in the early 1960s, resulting in a litter of light brown kittens with blue eyes. The breed was registered in the United States in 1975.

Appearance

A medium sized breed, the Tonkinese is a well-muscled cat and has short, thick and soft coat. The coat comes in three patterns – pointed, mink and solid; and the coat colors include cream, red, blue, chocolate, brown, lilac and the associated torties, tabbies. It has wedge shaped head, almond shaped eyes, slightly rounded chest and medium sized ears with broad base and oval tips. The legs are slim and well-muscled; it has hind legs that are slightly larger than the front. An adult male weighs about 8–12 pounds and females range from 6–8 pounds.

Personality

The Tonks has inherited the best traits of the Burmese and the Siamese. They are intelligent, playful, sociable, fun-loving, strong-willed, loving and have a strong memory. Tonks are friendly with other pets and children. The breed bonds easily with its owner and is highly people oriented.

Health Concerns

Specific health concerns for this breed are not reported. However, the breed is susceptible to health conditions like congenital vestibular disease and gingivitis.
