History

Sokoke is thought to have originated from the forest cats of Norwegian and the Afro-Danish Sokoke, which lived in the Sokoke Arabuke forest on the Kenyan coast, of East Africa. The Giriama tribe domesticated these cats and called them “Kadzonzo," which in the native Swahili means "similar to the tree bark". The Sokoke Cat is probably the rarest Breed in the World, with only a handful of breeding adults left on earth.

Appearance

The Sokoke is a medium sized cat with elegant long legs and thick coat with tabby pattern. The body is stylish and is well built, and the hind legs are longer than the front legs as in cheetah. The head is small and the cheek bones are well accented. The tufted ears are broad at the base and are always in the listening position and the eyes are amber to light green with dark penciling that complements its body color. The coat is glossy and stubby with no undercoat, and comes in various colors from light brown to chestnut brown and almost black with absolutely no white hairs.

Personality

Sokoke is active and vibrant and make affectionate companions but not clinging pets. They are communicative and might converse you with voice and body language for hours together to convey its opinions. It is not a lap cat and does not prefer to be cuddled but follow you closely and offer companionship. Sokoke cats are highly charged felines that still carry their original wilderness in their blood line and they like to be engaged and active always, hence Sokoke might not be a perfect pet for a typical sedate household.

Health Concerns

As Sokoke cats lack undercoat they are prone to chills and infections.
