History

The Selkirk Rex showed up in 1987 in Montana, US, when the first ever unusually curly-coated kitten of this breed was born to a straight-haired mother. Thus, the origin of the breed was just another case of spontaneous mutation, where the dominant gene in the parent caused this out of the ordinary breed. The breed owes its name to the Selkirk Mountains in Wyoming, where the cat was initially discovered. Though, it took the cat few years to get registered under CFA, it has been widely acclaimed since its formation.

Appearance

The breeders have developed the Selkirk Rex in varying coat lengths; short or medium and long. The cat has a physique of heavy boning with round head and full-cheek face. The coat is lavish, dense and fine textured, and comes in a variety of shades. The unusual curly-coat is characteristic to this breed. Kittens when born have curly hair, but go through a phase of massive hair-loss until it attains maturity to recover the curly coat.

Personality

The breed conveys a mix of emotions; like they are active and playful, and at times reserved and aloof. However, these cats are highly tolerant to other breeds and are patient enough to handle tough play. By nature they are friendly and extremely sociable, and for that reason do not prefer seclusion or isolation.

Health Concerns

The breed is naturally healthy and is not an easy prey to most of the diseases, although there have been cases of dermatitis and ear infections.
