History
Just as the name suggests, the Norwegian Forest Cat, commonly referred to as Wegies originated in Norway. The breed first appeared in Oslo, Norway in the year 1938. They are one of the biggest pure breeds and are famed for being companions to the Vikings. Norwegian Forest Cats are widely referred to as Norsk Skogkatt in Norway. The fame and popularity of this breed grew in leaps and bounds when the cat was named the official cat of Norway by the late king Olaf. This breed was first introduced in the US in 1979.
Appearance
They have emerald green eyes and long flowing hair. It has dense thick double coat that is naturally oily and water resistant. Though they have a slight resemblance to Maine coon cats, they differ from them in terms of body weight and structure. It has a well balanced, compact and a moderately long body. A broad chest and a triangular head are its peculiarities. They also possess rounded ears and expressive eyes, and flaunt sweet expressions. The heavily tufted feet help it to survive ice and cold.

Personality
Norwegian Forest Cats love to be cuddled and are fun loving and playful. They are easily adaptable and try to communicate through their body language. They are highly affectionate towards their owners and demand average attention and care from them. Their family oriented nature makes them ideal indoor pets. Norwegian Forest Cats are intelligent and courageous and find ways to amuse themselves. They are natural athletes and have good hunting skills too.
Health Concerns
Norwegian Forest Cats are normally strong and healthy, and nave very few inherited diseases. However, in some breeds, polycystic kidney disease and glycogen storage diseases are occasionally reported.
