History

Though the Egyptian Mau registered its name internationally only in the recent past, it is thought to have descended from the original African Wild Cat- the oldest domesticated cat of the Egyptians, which originated 4,000 years ago. It owes its name “Mau” to the Egyptian word for cat. The modern Mau originated in 1953 in Italy, when the exiled Russian Princess Natalie Troubetskoy, took interest in the cats of the Egyptian Ambassador through whom she procured many cats from Egypt and bred them.

Appearance

Egyptian Mau is an elegant, medium-sized, muscular and short-haired cat breed. At present, Egyptian Mau is the only naturally-occurring spotted breed of domesticated cat in the world. Its hind legs are rather longer than the front, giving the cat a weird look. Head is perfectly rounded with pointed ears that are set apart. Mau’s eyes are one of the most special features of this breed. Eyes are large, expressive and vaguely slanted, and are light green, a color exceptional to this breed. The coat is luxuriant and short and comes in various attractive shades of smoke, bronze and smoke with patterns of stripes or spots, which make Mau, a celebrity of the rings!
