History

The Domestic Cat (Felis silvestris catus), has been a favorite pet of humans for at least 9500 years now and they were basically bred by farmers to tackle the rodent menace in barns and homes. The present day cat is thought to have evolved from Felis lybica, one of the wildcat species in North Africa. However, some believe that the Domestic Cat is a different subspecies, which originated from the Ancytharian Sea area that was domesticated by man later on.

Appearance

The various breeds of domestic cats have different coat length and general appearance. While the smallest feline breeds weigh about 4.5- 6.5 pounds, the largest varieties can measure up to 15-19 pounds as an adult. The muscular body is streamlined and supple. They come in many colors and patterns like tabby, tortie, bi-colored etc. They have retractile claws and their eyes are perfectly adapted for night vision. The whiskers of a cat function like sensors and they are famous for their ability to land safely on four legs even from great heights.

Personality

Cats possess excellent memory and have an aptitude for learning by observation and experience. Many cats can be taught simple tricks and games and will respond to their names. Domestic cats are excellent hunters and also make wonderful indoor pets. They share a special rapport with their masters and are famous as lap warmers. These cats make use of various vocalizations and body language for conversing such as mewing, purring, hissing or growling. Domestic Cats are clever and are easily adaptable.

Domestic Cats are generally healthy with an average life span of about 15 years.
