History

The Chartreux is a reputed feline breed that traces its origin to France. It is thought to have evolved from the 16th century cats of Syria, which were brought to France by Carthusian monks. Commonly known as the ‘blue cat’ for its smoky blue color, it is a relatively rare species these days.

Appearance

Chartreux is huge with a well toned muscular body, short fine-boned limbs, big paws, and lightening reflexes. They are known as "potatoes on toothpicks" for being nimble footed despite a rather bulky body. Famous for their water proof blue double coat, Chartreux has copper colored eyes that stand out brilliantly. The particular structure of their heads and their long, narrowing muzzle, gives an impression of a ‘smile’ for which Chartreux cats are famous for.

Personality

Chartreux cats are generally very quiet and do not cry or mew as many other breeds. Chartreux cats are highly intelligent; can pick up simple tricks like opening door latches and are excellent retrievers and hunters. Chartreux gets along easily with kids and other pets in the family and are very affectionate with special affinity towards a particular member. Chartreux is an extremely adaptable cat, which can fine tune itself to many diverse situations without any complaint; they like to travel and can sit alone for long periods, which makes it a perfect pet for working people. They are extremely well behaved and they expect a good treatment in return as well.

Health Concerns

Patellar luxation (displacement of the kneecap) is a common hereditary problem noticed in Chartreux apart from gingivitis and other dental conditions.
