History

California Spangled was developed by Paul Casey, an ardent breeder based at California in the 1980s. Disturbed by the extensive poaching of leopards in the South African forests for their fur, he decided to create a domestic breed with stunningly similar features of the endangered wildcats to draw peoples’ attention to this issue. After eleven generations of selective breeding involving many breeds like British Shorthair, Egyptian feral cat, spotted Manx, Siamese etc, this cat breed with striking leopard traits were developed. But this stirred up quite a lot of controversies, and today, only a few breeders are left behind in their struggle to ensure recognition the California Spangled rightfully deserves.

Appearance

It looks like a miniature leopard, with an elegant, lean, but muscular body, with those unmistakable spots. The California Spangled cats can have coat colors of different shades like bronze, gold, blue and brown among others with contrast spots that stand out. It has an expressive face highlighted with well sculpted cheekbones. Its almond shaped eyes are expressive and lively.

Personality

It is a friendly cat who loves to follow its master or fetch toys and is highly intelligent. They have an innate hunting skill and are easily distracted by any moving object. Spangles are fully devoted to their owners and enliven the homes where they live. Despite an elegant look, Spangles are not ornamental cats and they like to be an active part of the family. Though they are extremely devoted to their masters, they are least demanding that make Spangles ideal pets for people who lead a hectic life.
