History

Believed to have originated in Burma, the Birman cats were brought to Europe in the year 1919. Considered to be the sacred cat of Burma, this breed was named Birman from the French spelling of Burma – ‘Birmanie’. Birman was registered as a pure breed in France in 1925, in England in 1966 and in the United States in 1967.

Appearance

Birman is a large, long stocky cat with long silky hair. It has a light coat with a golden cast and the points, face, legs and tail, are darker. The breed has blue, round eyes, full chin, Roman nose, white paws and a strong face with heavy jaws. It has medium length legs and the tail is dark with rounded tips. Though the Birmans are born pure white, they develop markings on their points within 2 – 14 days. The breed comes in blue, chocolate, lilac and seal points.

Personality

The Birmans are intelligent and get along very well with other pets. Basically a playful breed, Birmans are affectionate, loving and gentle. Their soft temperament makes them easy to handle and they tend to bond strongly with the family members.

Birman cats have an average life expectancy of 14 – 20 years. The breed is prone to respiratory diseases.
