History

The American Shorthair enjoys a proud history of being an American native breed, with its predecessors from North America. Developed from native American working cats, the breed was originally called as Domestic Shorthair, but was later renamed as the American Shorthair. In the early 20th century, the original breed underwent massive cross breeding with foreign breeds, which resulted in cats with differing coat lengths. But with the efforts of few of the native North Americans who preferred the purebred, the cat with its original characteristics is still alive.
