History

Recognized as one among the ancient breeds, the Saluki was earlier reserved for Egyptian Pharaohs. With its history tracking back to Afghan Hounds, this breed had made its appearance as early as 2100 BC. The Saluki owes its name to the ancient Arabian city of Saluki. Originated in Turkey, the early use for the dog was for hunting purposes. However, the breed was introduced in the US in the first half of the 20th century.

Appearance

Of aristocratic breed, the Saluki has a dignified look. It has a thin and lean physique with a narrow head and strong jaw lines. The dog is slightly longer than it is tall and has lavish feathers on ears, tail and between the toes. The coat comes in black and tan, fawn, white, cream, gold and red. The Saluki that comes with a smudge of white on the forehead is very rare and so is considered unique.

Color

White, cream, fawn, golden, red, grizzle and tan tricolor (black, tan and white), black and tan, or any of the previously mentioned colors and white.

Personality

The Saluki is not a breed for everyone, as the dog is less expressive in showing its affection and prefers just one owner. Though it appears quiet and composed, the dog tends to react to tough training sessions. The dog has high self-importance, but is loyal and affectionate to a consistent owner. It responds well to other pets, but not to the non-canine variety.
