History

Believed to have originated from the Vendee region of France, the petit basset griffon vendeen is also called “Little Griffon Vendeen Basset”. It is a cross between the breeds, St. Hubert and the white & tan Italian hound. They are also termed scent hounds due to their strong sense of smell. This friendly and independent breed is an excellent digger and is always alert and exploring.

Appearance

Petit basset griffon vendeens have a well-balanced body and intelligent looking eyes. They have narrow and fine ears folding inward and a tail that tapers towards the end. The thick double coat comes in hues of black, orange, yellow or tri-color with grizzle markings.

Color

orange, lemon, gray, or black. Other acceptable colors are bicolor, tricolor, or grizzling.

Personality

They generally have an active and lively temperament. A considerate owner with a consistent approach can train the dog extremely well. This breed can be dangerous with other non-canine pets. They are over protective and demand lots of attention from the owners.

Health Concerns

These breeds of dogs have a great deal of health issues to deal with. Hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, luxating patella, or heart murmurs and hereditary eye abnormalities like persistent pupillary membranes and retinal folds are common in this breed. The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen dogs are prone to yeast infections in the ears and glaucoma. In some cases, this breed also suffers from aseptic meningitis, characterized by lethargy, fever, neck or back pain, hypothyroidism, food allergies and skin allergies also. The normal lifespan ranges from 14 and over.
