History

Papillons, also known by the names Epagneul Nain or Dwarf Spaniel, have easily worked their way into the hearts of millions of pet lovers around the world with their cute look. Otherwise named the continental toy spaniel, papillon is a happy dog that is deeply attached to its owner. Papillon is the French word for ‘butterfly’; an apt name for this breed as it has ears spread like the wings of a butterfly. Its hairy tail had also once fetched him the title of squirrel spaniel.

Appearance

This breed has a cute and intelligent expression with its short pointed muzzle. Papillons grow to an average height of 11 inches. Adding to its look is the curled tail. The dark and round eyes have an inquisitive look. Its easy and graceful gait is noteworthy and easily catches the eye. They have pretty ears, which look more like the spread wings of a butterfly. It has abundant, silky smooth coat.

Color

White, with patches of any color except liver.

Personality

Papillons are rather aggressive towards other dog breeds, but get along well with rest of the species, especially cats. Though commonly termed as a small and lively toy dog, the papillons have a tough attitude that lies concealed within them. This sensitive and affectionate breed requires a caring and loving owner. It is affectionate, obedient, lively and playful.

Health Concerns

They have an average life span of 16 years. The most common health issues affecting this breed are knee cap defects and soft spot on the skull.
