HISTORY

Burmese cats are all descendants of Wong Mau, a walnut-brown cat from Burma, that was bred with Siamese cats, resulting in this popular, flat-faced, shorthair breed. Despite their name, the Burmese was first bred in San Francisco in the 1930s. There are two separate subdivisions of this breed -- Burmese and Foreign Burmese -- but they are both the descendant of Wong Mau.

APPEARANCE

Deceptively heavy, the Burmese is lovingly known as a “brick wrapped in silk.” Their satiny soft coat is very short and requires next to no grooming to keep nice and shiny. Their eyes are expressive and ensnaring, giving them an alluring appearance. In conjunction with their sweet demeanor, this cat might just steal your heart!

PERSONALITY

The Burmese are smart, communicative, and friendly cats. They make a great family cat, getting along like gangbusters with children, and are comfortable around other pets, too. They might be a ball of energy as a kitten, but they cool off quickly, and end up a relatively laid back adult. They are very people-centric, and will follow their family around everywhere. Female Burmese are typically more energetic than males, and both sexes are very emotionally expressive. They even sulk if they are bummed out about something.

color

The Burmese can be found in either sable, champagne, blue, or platinum.
