Different sizes of dogs age at different speeds. That is why the average lifespan for a small dog is almost twice that of a giant breed. To find out just how old your dog actually is, check our this handy converter chart.

The rule of thumb for calculating dog age has always been a simple 7:1 ratio, and if you want to get a quick, simple, and generally inaccurate answer, this is a surefire way to get there. However, if you want a more precise answer, there are a number of other consideration to be made.

Your Dog's Age in Human Years

For starters, canine growth is not a steady progression -- for the first year or two, maturation happens at a far more accelerated rate (higher still for smaller dogs), and steadily decreases once maturity is reached. A good benchmark is that, at six months old any dog, of any size, is roughly at the same growth point as a human child at age ten.

From here, the next year and a half can equate to anywhere from another 10 to 14 human years, making your two year old pup (depending on their breed size) actually anywhere from 20 to 24 years of age, with smaller dogs having been quicker to mature.

At this point, the maturation pendulum starts swinging in the other direction, with dogs of larger size aging more rapidly. Once maturity is achieved, the rate of aging for toy-size dogs (per year) drops to approximately 3.5 years, 4 years for small dogs, 4.5 years for medium sized dogs, 5.5 years for large breeds, and a whopping 7.5 years for our largest dogs.

If you follow these different steps, you should be able to calculate your specific dog’s age. But why do that when there is this handy chart right here?
