Oxytetracycline HCl belongs to the tetracyclines class of drugs. The medication is effective against a wide range of bacteria including those infecting the eyes, bones, sinuses, respiratory tract and blood cells. It works by interfering with the production of proteins that the bacteria need to multiply and divide, thus hampering the spread of the infection. Besides being used for preventing bacterial growth in cats and dogs, Oxytetracycline HCl is effective for the treatment of bacterial enteritis and bacterial pneumonia in pigs, cows, sheep, chicken, turkey, and even honey bees.
Precautions when using Oxytetracycline HCl (Terramycin Powder)
It is advised to make fresh solutions every 24 hours, and make sure to prepare the solution using drinking water and not liquid feed supplements. Avoid administering the product with milk. as it might decrease their abiliuty to absorb the drug. Patients on anticoagulants should have their dosages adjusted. Oxytetracycline may decrease the effectiveness of insulin.
Side Effects of Oxytetracycline HCl (Terramycin Powder)
Young cats or dogs may have discoloration of their teeth if given a large enough of a dosage. Anaphylaxis or cardiovascular collapse may occur in rare instances. Symptoms may include ataxia, facial swelling, trouble breathing, drooling, and a general restlesness.
In dogs, oxytetracycline HCL may cause urolith (crystals) to form in the urinary tract. Cats are even more likely to suffer from urolith formation, along with possible fever, depression, and hair loss.
Dosage for Oxytetracycline HCl (Terramycin Powder)
For dogs and cats with bacterial infections, 20mg/kg orally three times a day, or a 7mg/kg IV drip every 12 hours.
