Question:

Six months ago I took in my daughter's 3 month male kitten as he was being abused and allowed to roam all around the empty mountains behind her home in San Rafael,CA. He was pretty wild when we got him,but my other daughter lives in the apartment downstairs of my house and she agreed to keep him and slowly we have been trying to get him adjusted to my 6 year old male cats. They are all males and they are all fixed, but my six year old cats are very domesticated and house cats only. The new cat,Blackjack is still quite feral and we allow him to come upstairs only when someone is present to watch him as the first thing he does is attack my older cats and tries to bite and fight with them. They both run to me or my husband for help and we are at our wits' end as to how to get them to become friends. Is this ever possible? My husband and I both try to pet him and make him trust us,but he will allow us to pet him only for a few seconds and then he tries to bite us also.I would really ap

Answer:

You have a difficult task. First, have the kitten neutered and you may have to consider declawing him. It is better, in my opinion, that he has a home declawed then no home with claws. Second, buy a baby gate or some type of barrier so the cats can see each other but not interact. Do this for several weeks until they get used to each other. Touching, petting, feeding are all good ways of earning a kittens trust. Give the kitten treats a 1-2 times a day. Give it time and have a water gun available in case another cat fight brakes out:). vetcare
